KCI AI Working Session #1 - AB 2876 and the ELA/ELD Framework
Friday, February 07, 2025

There are two pieces of legislation that will directly impact the curriculum that will be taught to students in all districts across the State. Senator Josh Becker created SB 1288, which declares that there is an urgent need at both the state and local levels to adopt policies that promote the safe and effective us of AI in education. Assemblymember Marc Berman created and passed AB 2876, which would define "AI literacy". It would incorporate AI literacy content into the math, science, and history-social science curriculum when they are revised after January 1, 2025.
On February 7, we will examine AI literacy for ELA and ELD in regard to these two bills. While there are important points to discuss on both bills, the KCI will facilitate a working session on AB 2876 and its potential impact on the upcoming ELA/ELD California Framework Revision. Our goal is to provide insight into both the benefits and the setbacks that AI might have on new curricula related to those subject areas, and we want to relay the excitement and concerns to the State Government of Bay Area school districts.
The Agenda will be as follows:
- 10:00-10:05 – Welcome and Introduction
- 10:05-10:40 – What is AB 2876, how will it affect the curriculum, and Q&A - Assembly Member Marc Berman
- 10:50-12:00 – AI in ELA – What does the future look like? (Victoria Salas Salcedo - Milpitas Unified ELA Practitioner)
- 12:00-12:40 – Lunch
- 12:45-1:55 – AI in ELD – What does the future look like? (Efrain Tovar - Selma Unified ELD Practitioner)
- 1:55-2:00 – Closing and next steps
- 2:00-3:00 – District work time (on their own using the KCI)
